Traditionally Oppression. A lake with no water left in it: effort continuing to be spent against a situation that has stopped giving anything back no matter how much more is poured into it hoping for a different result. One of the more sobering hexagrams, treating real exhaustion as a serious condition requiring a change in approach, not more persistence applied to the same failing strategy over and over.

It appears around burnout, situations where continued effort produces diminishing or no returns, circumstances that have genuinely stopped supporting further push regardless of how much you want them to keep going. Its counsel is notably direct: favor inner composure and quiet integrity even amid genuinely difficult circumstances, but it does not counsel simply pushing harder against something that's already stopped working entirely.

Say you've been pouring energy into a job or project for a long stretch, well past the point where that effort produces meaningfully different results than it did months ago when you started noticing this. This validates that the depletion is real, not a personal failing or a sign you're not trying hard enough at it, and its counsel is to stop pushing against a situation that has stopped giving back — protect your remaining composure, rest deliberately, rather than treat more persistence as the answer to something that has structurally run dry underneath you already.

Traditionally paired with Hexagram 48, Well, as complementary opposites — a depleted source against an inexhaustible one that hasn't yet been found or drawn from. And the sequence carries real reassurance: depletion here is followed by a source that never runs dry, once you actually find it and start drawing from it again. The old text specifically favors quiet, composed speech even while oppressed; words spoken in bitterness during this kind of depletion tend not to be well received, while composed, sincere communication still reaches people even when everything else about the situation feels completely stuck.
