Hexagram 56 / 64
Journey
Traditionally The Wanderer. Fire on a mountain, moving and impermanent rather than settled in one place for long stretches at a time. This describes circumstances where you're without your usual support, away from home, in unfamiliar territory, or in an inherently temporary situation, and counsels the specific conduct that makes such circumstances go well rather than badly for you in the end. Its trigrams are Fire above and Mountain below, the second daughter moving over the youngest son's stillness — fire that doesn't stay in one place, forever traveling on to whatever it can next attach to, much like a traveler with no fixed base.
It appears around travel or temporary situations, circumstances where you lack your usual standing and support and can't simply assume people will extend you the trust you're used to getting elsewhere. Its counsel favors modesty, adaptability, and conduct appropriate to a guest rather than someone with established authority — caution, courtesy, and keeping a low profile in unfamiliar circumstances until you've actually earned some standing there for yourself.
Think of starting a new job in an unfamiliar city where your reputation hasn't been established yet and nobody there has any prior reason to trust your judgment over anyone else's. This hexagram favors a specific posture: courteous, observant, and modest, rather than acting with the same assumed authority you might have had at your last, well-established position elsewhere. A wanderer who reads the new environment carefully and earns standing gradually fares considerably better than one who assumes their old standing simply travels with them unchanged into the new place.
Traditionally read as describing not just literal travel, but any circumstance where you're operating outside your normal base of support and recognition, however temporary that situation might eventually turn out to be. The old text favors a wanderer maintaining correct, careful conduct even when treated poorly by their surroundings, not tolerating genuine mistreatment indefinitely without response, but responding to it with continued composure rather than an escalation a guest's position can't really afford to risk right now.
