Conflict
Heaven moving upward while water moves downward: two forces built to separate rather than resolve into each other. Conflict describes a real mismatch of direction, not just a disagreement of opinion — both sides are moving in ways that structurally can't reconcile unless one of them changes course entirely, which is a harder thing to ask for than simply resolving a misunderstanding.
Its advice is unusually blunt for this system: pursuing conflict to the end, even from a position of being right, tends to produce a hollow win. The old text favors settling and stepping back over prolonged confrontation, because the underlying mismatch rarely disappears just because one side loses the argument. This tends to appear around disputes, legal matters, standoffs — situations where mediation genuinely serves you better than total victory, however satisfying that victory might feel in the moment it's won.
Picture a disagreement with a business partner over the direction of a shared venture, where you're both defending reasonable positions that simply don't point the same way. Conflict showing up here is a nudge to check whether you're fighting to be right or fighting to resolve something. Those aren't the same goal, and the tradition favors the second even at the cost of a clean win — a settlement you can both live with tends to outlast a victory one side has to swallow and quietly resent afterward.
Conflict follows Expectation directly, and the pairing makes sense: waiting pushed too far tends to curdle into confrontation once patience runs out entirely. Its own closing image doesn't end in victory but in caution — about anyone who makes a business of contention, who starts to need the fight more than the resolution it was supposedly about in the first place, and who ends up worse off for having "won."
