Hexagram 10 — Onset

Hexagram 10 / 64

Onset

Traditionally Treading, or Conduct. Its classic image is treading on a tiger's tail: the danger is real and immediate, but survivable if your conduct is careful and precise. This is a hexagram about how you move through risk, not whether you should move at all — the tiger, notably, isn't hostile by default. It responds to how it's approached, and much of the outcome depends on that response rather than on the tiger's own temperament.

It appears around power imbalances and sensitive negotiations — situations where the stakes are real but panic or clumsiness, not the situation itself, is the actual danger. The counsel is to treat the more powerful party with genuine care rather than provoking it or freezing entirely in the moment it matters most. Handled with composure, even a risky situation resolves without harm, and several of its line texts specifically describe conduct that succeeds through steadiness alone, without any special advantage beyond that.

Say you need to ask a difficult, powerful stakeholder for something you genuinely need — more time, more budget, a concession you're not sure they'll grant you at all. This hexagram isn't telling you to avoid the ask. It's telling you the manner matters as much as the substance of the request itself. Approach directly and respectfully, without aggression or nervous over-apology, and the encounter tends to resolve better than the anxiety leading up to it suggests it will.

Onset pairs with Hexagram 9, continuing its theme of patience and precision — where 9 counsels gentle accumulation, 10 counsels careful conduct in the actual moment of movement, once the moment of accumulation is over and something has to actually happen now. Read broadly, it applies to any encounter where your own conduct, more than the other party's disposition, decides how things unfold — which is, in its own way, reassuring, since your conduct is the one part of the encounter you actually control from start to finish.
