Hexagram 15 — Humility

Hexagram 15 / 64

Humility

One of the few hexagrams in the whole sequence traditionally read as having no unfavorable position at all. Every line, in every circumstance, is considered auspicious. Its image is a mountain beneath the earth rather than rising above it — something naturally great choosing to stay low, and gaining real strength from that choice rather than losing anything by it, the way a mountain doesn't need to announce its own size to remain exactly what it is regardless of who notices.

Practically, it's about as direct as advice gets from this system: whatever your surrounding circumstances, staying modest, giving credit generously, and skipping self-promotion will serve you well right now. It often shows up alongside hexagrams of success or achievement, like Hexagram 14, as a kind of built-in check on how you carry accomplishment, a reminder that arrives right when it's easiest to ignore and hardest to remember to apply.

Say you genuinely deserve credit for something — a group project's success, a well-executed idea nobody else quite saw coming — and have a real choice about how loudly to claim it. Humility doesn't counsel hiding your contribution or fake modesty. It counsels sharing credit and letting the work speak for itself, on the premise that this holds up better over time than campaigning for recognition does, even if the campaigning would work faster in the short term and feel more satisfying immediately.

Its near-universal favorability is one of the more commented-on features of the whole text, often read as a kind of philosophical anchor for the entire system: balance over extremes, stated more plainly here than almost anywhere else in the sequence. Its favor applies across genuinely different postures — leading, following, succeeding, struggling — which is part of why it's read as close to universally auspicious rather than situational, a rare case in this system of advice that doesn't depend heavily on timing or circumstance to hold true.
