Hexagram 14 — Possessing greatness

Hexagram 14 / 64

Possessing greatness

Traditionally Great Possession, or Abundance. Fire high in the sky, illuminating everything below: visibility and abundance together, success that's plainly evident rather than hidden or quietly enjoyed out of sight. This describes real, substantial success — resources or achievement genuinely in hand, not merely hoped for or promised somewhere down the line. The two trigrams here are Fire above and Heaven below, brightness resting on pure strength — traditionally read as success that's both real and openly held, power with nothing left to hide.

Its counsel is about character more than strategy. Great possession is sustained not by clinging to it, but by staying humble and generous with what you've gained along the way. The text is explicit: abundance held by someone who stays grounded continues and even grows further; abundance held by someone who grows arrogant tends to attract exactly the reversal Hexagram 12 warns about, often faster than they'd expect given how solid things currently feel.

Picture receiving a significant promotion or windfall, and noticing a temptation to let it change how you treat the people who supported you along the way to get there. This hexagram is both congratulations and a direct caution: the success is real and deserved, and it holds steady only if you stay generous rather than start acting like the gain was entirely your own doing from start to finish. Worth remembering — the tradition favors humility toward those with less, not just gratitude toward whoever helped you, extending generosity in all directions rather than selectively toward people who might reciprocate it later.

Possessing Greatness is closely linked with Fellowship (13): genuine community is often read as what makes real abundance sustainable rather than isolating, since success held alone tends to isolate the person holding it from everyone around them. If this hexagram appears about success you've achieved, the question is less about protecting the gain and more about how you carry it into the relationships that surround it.
