Liberation

Traditionally Deliverance. Thunder and rain finally breaking tension that had been building for some time now: the release after a period of real constraint that finally gives way all at once. This is the natural counterpart to Impediment (39), describing what comes after an obstacle is finally cleared and the pressure behind it can move freely again at last.

It appears when a period of difficulty is genuinely resolving — a stressful situation easing, a burden lifting, circumstances opening up after a constrained period that felt like it might never actually end. Its counsel favors prompt, grateful action once relief arrives: consolidate the gain, and let go of grievances from the difficult period rather than carrying them forward into the newly open space ahead of you.

Think of a long-running stressful situation, a legal matter or a health scare, finally resolving in your favor after a long stretch of uncertainty that wore you down. This confirms the relief is genuine, and its counsel is to actually use the newly open period rather than spend it re-litigating what just ended and is now behind you. Consolidate what's now possible, and consciously let go of resentment toward whoever or whatever caused the constraint in the first place, however justified that resentment might feel.

Liberation's pairing with Impediment is one of the clearer before-and-after sequences in the text — obstruction followed directly by resolution — often cited as an example of how the system treats difficulty as inherently temporary rather than a permanent state you simply have to accept. The old text specifically favors swift, decisive action once liberation arrives, cautioning against lingering too long in a now-resolved difficulty out of habit or lingering caution left over from before. The relief this hexagram describes is meant to be used, not just acknowledged and then set aside unused out of old habit.
