Decrease is fundamentally about sacrifice that serves a larger good, not loss for its own sake or as a demonstration of virtue to be admired.

It appears around situations calling for deliberate simplification — cutting expenses to fund something more important, reducing your own comfort to support someone else, simplifying a situation cluttered with excess that's stopped serving any real purpose long ago. Its counsel emphasizes proportion: decrease made with good intention and appropriate restraint benefits everyone involved; taken to an extreme, it loses its value and starts costing more than it was ever meant to save.

Say you're deliberately cutting back on discretionary spending for a period to fund something that matters more — education, a family need, a meaningful transition you're actively preparing for right now. This hexagram favors that sacrifice specifically because it's proportionate and purposeful, not indefinite austerity adopted as a permanent lifestyle you never revisit. Its confidence is in a reduction sized to serve something real, not in self-denial as a virtue on its own separate from what it actually accomplishes.

Decrease pairs directly with Hexagram 42, Increase, as complementary opposites — loss and gain understood as connected rather than separate fortunes, since what's given up in this pairing frequently returns as increase elsewhere, sometimes in a form you didn't expect at all. The old text specifically cautions that the same principle taken to an extreme, depriving yourself or others of genuinely necessary support in the name of sacrifice, is a real error, not a deeper virtue worth pursuing for its own sake regardless of cost. Whether this sacrifice was wise usually shows up later, in whether what it funded actually justified the cost of it.
