Its counsel favors sincerity and appropriate pacing: real influence builds gradually and mutually, and several line texts trace this quite literally, describing responsiveness moving from the toes upward through the body, deepening in stages rather than arriving all at once in a single leap forward.

Think of the early stage of a promising relationship, where the temptation is either to force intensity faster than it's actually developing, or to hold back out of caution and never let it develop at all either way. This hexagram favors letting the mutual response build in its own stages — noticing how the other person is actually responding at each step, rather than skipping ahead to a closeness the relationship hasn't earned yet on its own terms and its own timeline.

Interaction opens what's traditionally considered the second half of the sequence — where the first half explores more cosmic and structural themes, the second turns toward human relationship and social life more directly. Several line texts caution against forcing this kind of mutual influence ahead of its pace: agitated pursuit of connection tends to work against the very responsiveness this hexagram favors, since mutual attraction, by nature, can't be rushed by only one side wanting it faster than the other is ready for.
