This hexagram favors authentic motive over clever positioning — things pursued through real innocence tend to succeed, while the same actions pursued through calculation tend to misfire in ways that are hard to predict beforehand no matter how carefully they're planned.

It appears when the wisest approach is the most direct and honest one available: speaking plainly, acting from real motive, trusting a straightforward path over an engineered one designed to manage how you're perceived by others. There's a real-world caveat attached, though — sincerity doesn't guarantee immunity from misfortune caused by other people or circumstance entirely outside your control, and the text is honest about that limit rather than promising more than it can actually deliver on.

Say you're tempted to carefully engineer how you say something difficult — rehearsing an angle, softening it strategically — versus simply saying the true thing plainly and living with how it lands afterward. Flawlessness favors the second path, on the premise that honesty, even imperfectly delivered, tends to land better and hold up longer than a managed performance of it ever could. It won't guarantee the other person receives it well. It favors the honest bet anyway, because it's the one you can actually stand behind afterward without regret.

Flawlessness follows Return, and the pairing suggests genuine renewal needs to be approached without excessive calculation to take root properly, the way new growth doesn't benefit from being over-managed at every stage. Its favor for sincerity isn't naive, though — some line texts describe real misfortune arriving despite blameless conduct, an honest acknowledgment that innocence doesn't buy control over outcomes, only over how truthfully you showed up in the first place, which is the part actually within your control to begin with.
