Hexagram 26 / 64

Learning from the great

Traditionally The Taming Power of the Great. Heaven contained within a mountain: immense power deliberately restrained rather than released the moment it becomes available to use. This is about the value of built-up capacity that's being consciously managed rather than spent impulsively the first chance it gets to be spent. Its trigrams are Mountain above and Heaven below — great strength deliberately held in check by stillness, a pairing the tradition reads as the very picture of restrained power waiting for its moment.

It appears around periods of study, training, or accumulation, where the real work is building capability and holding back the urge to act before you're actually ready to act well. Strength gathered and disciplined this way, the text suggests, eventually supports far greater achievement than the same strength spent too soon, before it had time to fully form into something reliable.

Think of years spent training toward a credential or capability before actually putting it to use in the world — a degree, a certification, expertise built quietly while nobody has yet asked you to prove it out loud. That restraint is exactly the right use of your current energy, not wasted time spent waiting for permission to start something real. Building capacity before the moment demands it is part of what makes the eventual achievement possible at all, rather than a delay before the real work finally begins.

Often read alongside Hexagram 9 as a larger, more consequential version of the same theme — restrained accumulation, but on a grander scale with correspondingly larger stakes attached to getting the timing right this time. The traditional imagery includes both a bull restrained by a headboard and, later, a boar's tusks deliberately blunted rather than removed entirely: restraint here isn't about eliminating strength, but channeling it so it can be released constructively later, when it's actually needed, rather than causing harm in the meantime while it waits.
