Hexagram 27 / 64

Nutrition

Traditionally The Corners of the Mouth, or Providing Nourishment. A mouth open between a mountain above and thunder below. This hexagram asks a genuinely practical question: what are you feeding, and what is feeding you? Food, ideas, care, and influence all fall under its image, since all of them enter or leave a person the same basic way, through what they choose to take in and put back out.

It appears around questions of self-care, what influences you let into your thinking, how you provide for others — literally, emotionally, or intellectually, and often all three at once without your quite noticing which one you're doing. Its counsel distinguishes nourishing yourself properly from neglecting your own needs to feed others excessively, and seeking worthy sources of nourishment from consuming whatever is simply nearest and easiest to reach for without much thought.

Consider someone who spends most of their energy caring for a team or family while quietly running on empty themselves, or someone who's been passively consuming whatever information and company is closest rather than seeking out what's actually nourishing to them specifically. This hexagram is an invitation to examine that balance honestly, without treating self-care as selfish or other-care as automatically virtuous by default. What would it look like to feed yourself as deliberately as you feed everyone else around you every day?

Nutrition follows Learning from the Great, and the sequence makes sense: accumulated strength and discipline need proper ongoing nourishment to be sustained rather than depleted the moment they're finally put to use. Worth a specific caution from the old text — several lines describe someone neglecting their own nourishment to feed others in ways that were never actually asked for or needed in the first place. Generosity misdirected, however well-intentioned, isn't the same as well-aimed care, and can leave both people worse off than before it was offered.
