Change

Traditionally Revolution. Fire beneath a lake, two elements in real conflict that resolve only through transformation of the underlying structure rather than any adjustment within the existing one that's already there. Appropriately for a text called the Book of Changes, this describes change at its most consequential — not adjustment, but genuine reform that alters the shape of the thing itself entirely.

It appears around situations requiring structural change rather than surface adjustment: a career pivot, ending something fundamentally not working, reforming a system that minor tweaks can't fix no matter how many of them are tried in sequence. Its counsel is careful about timing and legitimacy — revolution undertaken only when genuinely necessary, at the right moment, by someone with real credibility to carry it through to completion.

Say minor adjustments have clearly failed to fix a career or relationship over repeated attempts that haven't worked, and the honest conclusion is that fundamental change, not another small tweak, is what's actually required now. This hexagram favors proceeding with that larger transformation, provided the timing is right and you have real standing to make it, rather than acting impulsively out of frustration alone without that standing behind you. Premature or illegitimate revolution is prone to failure or unnecessary harm to everyone involved in it.

Associated with major turning points in the classical commentary tradition, and its position leading into Hexagram 50, Credence, reads as intentional: destruction of the old structure followed by establishing something new and more stable in its place afterward. The line texts describe this transformation unfolding in stages — initial resistance, a middle point where change becomes undeniable to even its doubters, and a final stage where even those who doubted it come to accept the new arrangement as simply the obvious one now. Legitimate revolution rarely wins full acceptance immediately, and expecting it to is its own kind of mistake to avoid.
