Traditionally The Cauldron. A ceremonial vessel used to prepare food and, by extension, to sustain and transform raw material into something refined and worth having at the end of the process. Credence follows Change (49) as its natural counterpart — after revolution, the work of building something legitimate and sustaining in its place, rather than leaving the aftermath unattended and hoping it sorts itself out.

It appears around establishing new structures or institutions meant to last, starting something meant to nourish others over time, not just yourself in this particular moment. Its counsel emphasizes stability, correct positioning, and real substance: a cauldron, in this image, needs sturdy legs and worthy contents to function as intended, not just to look impressive while standing empty and unused.

Picture building a new organization or relationship on new footing after a significant change — the actual foundational work of making sure it's set up to last well beyond its first enthusiastic months of energy. This hexagram favors that founding work specifically: making sure the structural basics are sound and what you're putting into the new system is genuinely worthy of it, rather than rushing past the unglamorous foundational details to get to visible results faster than they can actually be honestly earned.

One of only two hexagrams named directly after a physical object, tied through that association to themes of legitimate authority and proper transformation running through Chinese ritual tradition more broadly than this hexagram alone. The old text specifically favors this new structure being used to actually nourish others, not just admired for its own stability from a comfortable distance — a cauldron that holds food no one is fed from misses the point of building it at all in the first place.
