Hexagram 52 / 64
Concentration
Traditionally Keeping Still, associated with the mountain. A mountain resting on a mountain: complete stability, the cessation of unnecessary movement that isn't the same thing as simply doing nothing at all. The natural counterpart to Awakening's shock (51) — where that hexagram jolts you into motion, this one counsels real, deliberate stillness chosen on purpose rather than imposed on you by circumstance.
It appears around moments calling for meditation, introspection, or simply stopping rather than continuing to act out of habit or momentum alone without examining either one closely. Its counsel emphasizes stilling the mind as much as the body — the old text describes keeping still "in one's back," a place you don't see and aren't distracted by, an image for stillness so complete it isn't even self-conscious about being still in the first place.
Consider a period of real overstimulation, too much input, too many decisions, too much reacting to whatever comes next without ever quite catching up to any of it, where the actual need is simply to stop for a while and let things settle on their own. This hexagram favors deliberately withdrawing into stillness, not avoidance, but a genuine settling of attention inward, letting the noise of recent events, perhaps including a recent shock like Hexagram 51 describes, actually resolve before responding to anything further at all.
The second of the doubled-trigram hexagrams built from mountain, and its placement after Awakening forms a deliberate pair: the shock that forces attention outward, immediately followed by the counsel to turn that attention inward and settle it properly this time. The old text describes stillness applied differently depending on which part of the body-as-metaphor is invoked, feet, legs, heart, each a progressively deeper level of settling that takes more practice to reach than the last. The stillness this hexagram favors is a genuine pause, preparing you to act more accurately once you actually move again afterward.
