Despite its somewhat ominous English name here on this site, this hexagram is often read favorably, describing the useful dissolving of unhealthy rigidity or division that's outlived its original purpose long ago.

It appears around situations where something too rigid, divided, or frozen needs to be dispersed and reconnected — resolving a standoff, breaking down unnecessary barriers between people, dissolving old patterns that have outlived their usefulness but keep getting maintained out of pure habit rather than any real need. Its counsel favors deliberate action to reconnect what's become scattered or estranged rather than accepting the division as a permanent condition to live with.

Say a team or family has quietly split into rigid factions over time, each side more entrenched than the actual disagreement probably warrants on its own merits at this point. This hexagram favors actively working to dissolve that rigidity, finding a shared project or gesture that gives people a reason to reconnect across the divide between them, rather than accepting the fragmentation as a permanent feature of the group that just has to be tolerated indefinitely.

Its classical association with dispersing and reconnecting is sometimes linked in commentary to a ruler using ritual or shared symbols to reunite a scattered people after a period of real division among them. The line texts favor dispersing self-interest specifically, not just external divisions between groups, including an image of letting go of your own accumulated concerns for the sake of a larger, shared good that benefits everyone involved. The gesture that finally reconnects a divided group doesn't need to be large at all, only sincere enough that both sides recognize it as real rather than another empty gesture going through the motions.
