Thunder above and Mountain below make up its trigrams, traditionally the eldest son perched over the youngest son's stillness, a small amount of movement sitting on top of something that isn't built to carry much more than that yet.

It appears around situations where the wisest approach is attention to small, practical details — handling minor matters carefully, staying humble and cautious, recognizing that this isn't the moment for a bold, large-scale move even if one is genuinely tempting right now. Its counsel favors caution in small things over ambition in large ones at this particular moment, which can feel like a step down but usually isn't one at all.

Think of being tempted toward a big, ambitious move, a major pitch, a large investment, a bold public statement, at a moment when circumstances actually call for something more modest and careful instead of that. This hexagram favors resisting that temptation: the classical image of a bird flying too high when it should stay low is a caution against overreaching precisely when conditions call for staying grounded and attentive to small, correct details rather than reaching for a dramatic gesture.

Closely related conceptually to Hexagram 28's theme of excess, though in the opposite direction — where 28 warns against too much weight in the middle of a structure, this one warns against reaching too high when conditions call for staying modest instead of ambitious. The line texts favor attending to small matters diligently rather than attempting to correct large ones from this modest position that isn't yet strong enough to support the attempt properly. The caution isn't against ambition generally, only against reaching for a scale the current moment genuinely can't support yet, however capable you might become a bit later on.
